It is not common for a journalist to be given recognition and appreciation for his work.
But the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair Society did just that when Mr Mathias Nanghanda, a retired journalist, was given an accolade at the 2024 Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair (OATF) exhibitors award ceremony, in Ongwediva, as the trade fair was concluding.
“This individual is a seasoned media practitioner who plied his trade and skills for 40 years at various media houses under the Ministry of Information Communication Technology,” said Ongwediva Constituency Councillor, Mr Andreas Uutoni.
Uutoni, who also serves as a member of the OATF preparatory committee, stated that during Nanghanda’s time as a journalist at both New Era and NAMPA he extensively reported on OATF without fear or favour, and that through his work he contributed to the brand exposure of the OATF.
“He is a selfless individual and mentor who took many young people and upcoming journalists under his wing and is therefore worthy of recognition. His good deeds are indeed worth emulating.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, this ‘Lifetime Media Personality Award’ for his contribution towards the growth of the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair for over 20 years is presented to none other than Mr Mathias Nanghanda!”
The awards ceremony, sponsored by FNB Namibia, also conferred recognition to several other individuals, including Mr Remind Ekandjo who received a ‘Lifetime Service Personality’ award, Ms Penina Martin who received the ‘Lifetime Exhibitor’ award, and Ambassador Clemens Kashuupulwa who received the ‘Lifetime Guardian’ award.
“This award is truly fitting,” Nanghanda said. “During my time as a journalist I did mentor many young journalists here in the north. I really appreciate this recognition.”
