Welwitchia University celebrated International Nurses Day on 12 May by hosting a free public health testing event at Post Street Mall in Windhoek.
The initiative, led by student nurses and faculty staff from the Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Nursing, offered complimentary blood pressure and glucose testing to the public as part of the university’s ongoing commitment to community health and wellness.
International Nurses Day is observed globally each year on 12 May to honour the invaluable contributions of nurses to healthcare systems and society at large.
The date marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale (1820–1910), the founder of modern nursing, whose pioneering work laid the foundation for the profession today.
The day is officially recognised by the International Council of Nurses and serves as a reminder of the dedication, compassion, and resilience of nurses worldwide.
The 2025 theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” highlights the importance of investing in the well-being and development of nurses to ensure strong, resilient healthcare systems and healthier communities.
In a statement Mrs Christell Nassauw, the Director for Corporate Engagement and International Relations at Welwitchia University, said that nurses are often the first point of contact for patients, providing essential care, emotional support, and clinical expertise across all levels of the healthcare system.
During the event at Post Street Mall, Welwitchia University’s student nurses and faculty engaged directly with the community, providing free screenings and raising awareness about the importance of preventive health measures.
Nassauw said that this hands-on outreach not only benefited the public but also provided valuable real-world experience for the university’s future healthcare professionals.
“International Nurses Day is a time to recognise the tireless work and compassion of nurses everywhere.
“By offering these free health services, our students and staff are embodying the spirit of service that defines the nursing profession,” she said.
“Welwitchia University remains dedicated to advancing healthcare education and supporting the vital role of nurses in building a healthier Namibia.”
