The Town Council of Oshakati has allocated N$150 000 to be used for the construction of shared toilets in some of the town’s information settlements.

This is one of the provisions contained in the town’s budget released on 6 June.

“While Council emphasises the importance of every household having its own ablution facility on each plot, this remains a challenge, as not all residents have the means to build toilets on their properties,” said Oshakati’s Mayor Mr Leonard Hango as he tabled the town’s budget for the Financial Year 2025/2026.

“To address this, Council has made budgetary provisions of N$150 000 for the construction of shared toilets in some informal settlements, with a particular focus on the Onawa location.”

To enhance environmental and waste management efforts, the Council has also set aside money for skip containers and bins.

“This project cost Council an amount of N$350 000.00 to procure these skip containers and N$350 000.00 for wheel bins.”

Hango also said that in an effort to increase the Council’s assets and revenue base, while also addressing the accommodation needs of job seekers coming to Oshakati, the Council initiated a project to construct council flats.

“The project began with Phase One in the 2023/2024 financial year. Phase Two has been successfully implemented in the current 2024/2025 financial year, with an allocation of N$4.8 million dedicated to its completion.

“The project is expected to be finalized by 31 July 2025.”

The total budget for the new financial year is N$350, 144,407.00.

“This is against a total estimated operating income of Three Hundred Fifty Million, One Hundred Forty-Four Thousand, Four Hundred and Seven (N$350, 144,407.00) and expenditure of the same amount (N$350, 144,407.00) giving a balanced budget, no deficit, and no surplus,” Hango stated.
