On August 20, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Botswana chapter partnered with the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) to deliver a guest lecture on: ‘Media in Peace Support Operations’ at the BDF Staff College in Gaborone.

The initiative, the second of its kind and part of the BDF’s training programme, brought together participants from Botswana’s military, law enforcement agencies, the Office of the President, the Ministry of International Relations, and media students from Limkokwing University.

It also included representatives from the SADC region, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria.

MISA Botswana Chairperson, Thomas Nkhoma, facilitated the lecture and also participated in a panel discussion on local and international perceptions of the media’s role in covering military operations and the complex relationship between the two sectors.

The collaboration underscored the crucial role of the media in peace support operations, where transparent communication and public trust are vital for the success of effective peacekeeping missions.

It also underscored the value of cooperation between defence forces and media institutions in promoting peace, stability and professional development.

MISA Botswana reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the BDF and regional partners to enhance knowledge-sharing and deliver high-quality training that equips officers with the skills necessary to navigate today’s complex media landscape.
