Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe reports that Nyasha Mariga, chief photographer with the Masvingo Mirror, was on 5 September 2025, reportedly assaulted by the police in Masvingo while taking pictures of a mshikashika (unregistered taxi) driver who was resisting the impounding of his vehicle.

The driver reportedly lay under his vehicle to prevent it from being impounded (taken away by the police).

Mariga’s shirt was reportedly torn, and his camera was damaged. The police subsequently detained him for two hours before being released upon the deployment of a lawyer by the Masvingo Mirror.
