This year’s independence day commemorations, which happens to be the 36th anniversary of Namibia’s independence was today in Oshana region celebrated in style, with Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare who delivered the keynote speech.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah declared that every region must celebrate independence day, unlike in the past when independence day used to be celebrated with one event at a national level.

While in the past independence day celebrations centred mostly on political speeches, this year at Oshana the day’s festivities consisted of a lot of entertainment and little political talk.

Even the keynote address, delivered by Dr Ngurare consisted of little political messages but more on economic opportunities which have to be created in an independent Namibia.

Ngurare said that the government is committed to efforts to create economic opportunities, and one of the opportunities is the youth development fund which he said that there is still N$200 million available for the youth who want to start businesses.

He emphasised the fact that creative industries must take up the opportunity to access loans which are collateral free.

This year the theme of the celebration was, “Beyond 35: For a Prosperous Future.”
