Zambezi Region Football team has won the 20th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup at Oshakati Independence Stadium after defeating Kavango East by two goas to one.
The final match in the competition that started on 26 August took place this afternoon.
In the morning Ohangwena overcame Khomas in order to settle for the third spot. The match ended with a one-nil score-line in favour of Ohangwena.
Ohangwena’s player Martin Mandume walked away with both the Player of the Competition and the Top Goal Scorer of the Competition awards and two cheques totalling N$4,500. For coming third in the competition Ohangwena received bronze medals and a cheque of N$10,000.
The youngsters from Ohangwena, under coach Steven Kampandja, were thus happy for this achievement.
But it was Zambezi region who took the trophy for the first time in the history of The Namibian Newspaper Cup tournament. With the win, Zambezi walked away with not only the trophy and gold medals but also a cheque of N$35,000.
In second place Kavango East received a cheque of N$20,000 and silver medals.
Zambezi’s player Kalumbekwa Kalaluka was named the Man of the Final Match, and received a cheque of N$250. Zambezi’s coach, Lennox Kanyehu, thus had his mission accomplished.
