Eeshoke Chula Chula continues to amaze the nation as it collected four points over the weekend against two of Namibia’s oldest football clubs in their own backyards.
Chula Chula held Windhoek-based African Stars to a one-all draw last Saturday before beating Orlando Pirates, another Windhoek-based team, with one goal to nil.
The good performance over the weekend means that Chula Chula, a club originating from a village known as Eeshoke in Ohangwena Region, has collected eight points after four games, and no loss registered on their name so far. That is two wins and two draws.
For a team that is only playing in the top league for the first time, this achievement has amazed not only football lovers but also football analysts.
But more amazing is the manner in which Chula Chula has managed to draw big crowds of spectators to its matches, not only in Oshakati where the team plays its home ground matches, but also in Windhoek where record numbers of spectators filled the Hage Geingob Stadium during the weekend matches.
“For a long time Namibian soccer seemed to have died and not in any way possible to revive,” said Philip Munenguni, a follower of local soccer. “But now it seems that Chula Chula has breathed new life in the nostrils of Namibian soccer.”
According to Munenguni, the arrival of Chula Chula is the best thing to have happened to Namibian soccer.
“Now corporate companies will no longer ignore local soccer,” he said. “The chances are there now for local soccer to become professional.”
