A group of Swapo Party members, supporters and sympathisers in the town of Oniipa yesterday had a peaceful march to protest and express their anger at the suspension of the mayor of Oniipa Town Council Mr Jafet Augustus Nangolo.
The group of about 100 people handed over a petition to the town’s leadership in which several demands were made. The group is accusing the Swapo Party Oshikoto regional leadership of meddling in the affairs of the local authority and causing the “unfair and unprocedural suspension” of the mayor.
“We demand the explanation from the CEO the relationship between him and Swapo, whether he is serving the community but not political party.
“We demand the explanation from the CEO why he has been calling the political regional leaders represented in Oniipa Town Council in connection with swearing-in advice of the local authority councillors, while he is having educational qualifications to read the constitution.”
The angry protesters who were escorted by armed police to the petition handover also demanded an explanation from the Chief Executive Officer of the town why he failed to treat all the councillors the same way and why he had been involving himself in meetings with the Swapo district leadership and regionallor councillor Mr Tully Nuunyango.
“We demand the explanation from the CEO, why he handed over the suspension letter of his worship mayor Councilor Jafet Augustus Nangolo on behalf of Swapo Party at Oniipa Town Council.”
The group stated that its demand is for the CEO to respond to this petition within seven working days, “failing to do so, he must leave the office with immediate effect, and we demand the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development to intervene in this matter.”
