First National Bank of Namibia (FNB) Oshakati Branch donated sport equipment and other items to the psychiatry department of the Oshakati Intermediate State Hospital.

The donation valued at N$51 008.54 consists of painting materials, a burglar door and air conditioner, a television, two table tennis sets, radios, soccer and netball balls, electric shaving machines, sitting benches, as well as playing cards, dominoes and chess game boards.

“These items were carefully selected to support both mental and physical activity, which are vital components in enhancing social and professional performance for patients undergoing psychiatric care,” said Ms Toini Amakali, FNB’s Oshakati Branch Manager.

Amakali said that the psychiatry department of Oshakati Intermediate State Hospital provides critical services to the regions of Kunene, Oshana, Omusati, Oshikoto and Ohangwena.

“This donation reflects our commitment to ensuring that our communities continue to thrive in all areas. With the rising number of mental health challenges in these five regions, it is only right that we begin to focus our efforts more intentionally and support our health professionals and the patients they care for in that regard.”

Amakali stated that FNB is committed to supporting communities through various avenues. “One of these avenues is through community and health development, as it is the foundation of thriving communities, strong families, and productive individuals.”

Acting Medical Superintendent of the Oshakati Intermediate State Hospital Dr Benonia Sheetekela thanked FNB for the donation.

“Today’s donation to our Psychiatry Unit is not just about physical items; it is a powerful statement of shared values: compassion, care, and community,” Dr Sheetekela stated.

“The needs for expanded in-patient mental health services has grown exponentialy, and your support will directly help us respond to this increasing demand with dignity and improved capacity.”

Dr Katia Bastista, Head of Psychiatry Department at the hospital said: “Today we are not just here to receive a donation, but to acknowledge something deeper. A gesture of humanity, a sign of compassion and an act of solidarity with individuals who are often marginalized and misunderstood: people living with mental illness.”

Dr Batista also said: “It is easy to talk about mental health awareness but it takes commitment and heart to act. By supporting our patients in this way, you are helping to fight stigma and promote inclusion.”

The head of the psychiatry department, also known as Ward 16, said that recreational therapy is more than just leisure.

“For individuals facing the challenges of mental illness, it is a form of healing, a pathway to social connection and a bridge to recovery. Your generous donation helps us enhance the therapeutic environment, reduce isolation and provide moments of joy, creativity and peace to people who need it the most.”
