The primary objective of the Oshana Investment Conference was not to generate immediate investments, but to publicise and position Oshana Region as a viable and attractive investment destination.

This was said by Oshana Region’s Chief Regional Officer Ms Teopolina Hamutumua.

Hamutumua said that the conference which took place in August 2023 served as a platform to showcase investment opportunities in key sectors such as aquaculture, value-added production, tourism, infrastructure, and energy.

Almost two years since the investment conference, which cost the regional council N$400 000, Hamutumua said: “While the question of direct financial return is noted, it is important to clarify that the intention was not to recuperate funds but to create long-term economic visibility for the region.

“From that standpoint, the conference was a success; it enhanced investor confidence, strengthened partnerships between government and the private sector, and significantly amplified the visibility of Oshana’s untapped economic potential both nationally and regionally.”

Hamutumua pointed out that the N$400 000 bill consisted of expenses such as paying for the venue, transport, publication, broadcasting, catering, and other logistical costs.

Despite the heavy price tag for a two-day conference which took place at the Jose Eduardo dos Santos University of Namibia Engineering Campus in Ongwediva, Hamutumua said that the conference was worth it.

“We successfully engaged national and international investors, policymakers, financiers, and private sector leaders,” she stated.

“As a result, numerous investment interests were registered and several local businesses gained visibility, though formalised investments take time and follow-up processes. The momentum generated has since laid the groundwork for ongoing dialogue and project-level interest.”

On whether there are any plans for the region to host a similar investment conference, she responded in the positive.

“Yes, the Regional Council does plan to host future investment conferences, building upon the foundation set in 2023.

“These will be informed by feedback, outcomes, and lessons learned from this inaugural event and will aim to deepen sector-specific partnerships and attract project-level investments.

“We remain committed to creating a conducive environment for investment in Oshana Region and welcome continued media interest in our developmental efforts.”
