The historic 2026 elective congress of the Association of Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN) elected Ongwediva Mayor Mrs Naemi Amuthenu to serve as the association’s new president.
The congress which took place from 10 to 13 June was attended by hundreds of local authority councillors and town CEOs from all Namibia’s local authorities. It took place in Walvis Bay under the theme “Empowering Communities: Local Government as Catalyst for People Centred Development, Inclusion and Social Justice”.
During the three days of the congress various speakers took to the podium. The speakers included the Minister of Urban and Rural Development Mr Sankwasa James Sankwasa, outgoing ALAN president Mr Samuel !Oe-Amseb, secretary of Malawi Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Moses Chimphepo, and NIPAM director Mr Harold Murangi.
There was also a book launch by Mr Victor Angula. The book titled “How to Do the Job at Local Government” gives impactful advice, knowledge and information on local government leadership.
On the last day of the congress a new leadership of the association was elected, with Mrs Naemi Amuthenu serving as the new president of ALAN.
