Oshakati Town Council has launched its traffic law enforcement unit, marking a major milestone in the town’s commitment to road safety, orderly traffic management and sustainable urban development.
The unit was inaugurated by the Minister of Works and Transport Mr Veikko Nekundi during a ceremony held at the Oshakati town Council premises on Monday. The event was attended by government leaders, traditional authorities, law enforcement agencies, members of the business community and residents.
The establishment of this unit fulfils a key objective of the Oshakati Town Council Five-Year Strategic Plan (2022-2027) and is aimed at improving road safety, strengthening traffic management and supporting Oshakati’s continued growth as the Commercial Centre of the North.
Speaking at the launch, the Mayor of Oshakati, Mr Leonard Hango, described the occasion as a historic achievement for the Council.
“The establishment of this Unit is not merely about enforcing traffic laws, it is about promoting responsible road user behaviour, protecting lives, improving traffic flow and ensuring that Oshakati remains a safe, orderly and well-managed town for residents, businesses and visitors alike.”
Works and Transport Minister Veikko Nekundi said that the Roads Fund Administration has invested N$3,7 million over the 2025/26 and 2026/27 financial years to support the establishment of the Unit through vehicles, specialised equipment, uniforms and other operational resources.
“I call on the officers of this Oshakati Town Council Traffic Law Enforcement Unit to serve with integrity, professionalism and fairness,” Nekundi said.
The Unit is led by Superintendent Salomo Alweendo Nengushe, and Sergeant Lukas Mweuteapo Jonas. Another senior officer, Sergeant Ndinelao Kandiwapa Nangolo, is expected to join the Unit on 1 August 2026.
