Ongwediva Town Council tabled a budget for the financial year 2025/2026 in which land delivery is one of the top priorities.

The budget totalling N$205,5 million was tabled today by Ongwediva Mayor Reverend Taarah Shalyefu.

The budget prioritised key developmental projects such as land delivery, provision of services infrastructure, construction of social amenities, rehabilitation and upgrading of service infrastructure, acquisition of machinery and equipment, and crop field compensations.

“Specifically, the developmental projects that will be undertaken during the financial year 2025/26 are as follows: As part of our determination and resolve to enhance and accelerate land delivery, council has adopted a multi-faceted approach,” Shalyefu said at a Special Council Meeting called to adopt the budget.

“These include the allocation of two hundred and seventy-five (275) unserviced erven to the National Housing Enterprises, the allocation of undeveloped land with a capacity of two hundred (200) middle sized erven to the Development Workshop Namibia, the allocation of seventy-five (75) un-serviced and partially serviced erven to various property developers and the envisaged allocation of approximately one hundred and fifty un-serviced (150) erven to the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia.”

Shalyefu stated that an amount of N$5 million has been budgeted for crop field compensations.

A combined total amount of N$46 million has been set aside for the provision of services infrastructure in the town.

“Provision of water and sewer reticulation infrastructure at Extensions 1 and 3 (behind Wilbard Haindongo Open Market) for an amount of N$7 million, Pilot Project on the installation of prepaid water network system for an amount of N$434,783, Provision of water reticulation infrastructure at Extensions 17 for an amount of N$2,6 million, Provision of water reticulation infrastructure at Omatando Extension 1 (Phase 2) to the tune of N$4,4 million.”

The refurbishment of water towers within the Council’s premises (Phase 2) has also been budgeted for with an amount of N$3,5 million, while the provision of electricity reticulation network at Extension 12 (Phase 1) is budgeted for with an amount of N$5,2 million.

The re-design of intersection of Mandume Ndemufayo Road and Dr. Liberthine Amathila Street has been budgeted for with an amount of N$1 millio, while the re-design of intersection of Mandume Ndemufayo Road and Main Road (MR 92) is budgeted for with an amount of N$1 million.

“The upgrading of Abraham Nyambali Street from gravel to bitumen standard is budgeted for an amount of N$10 million, and the construction of storm water channels in town for an amount N$2,6 million.”

Shalyefu also said that the installation of CCTV cameras in Ongwediva will cost the town N$260,870), while the installation of high mast lights at Okandjengedi Settlement Area is allocated N$1,3 million.
