The two weekends of before and after Cassinga Day were a hive of football activity at the village of Omaalala as Oshana-based teams battled it out in a soccer tournament which was finally won last Sunday by Golden Bigs.
The tournament took place from 1 May and ended on 9 May at the Mvula Soccer Field at Omaalala, and was sponsored by business people of Omaalala, Adolfi, Ondangwa and Windhoek-based business people from the north.
Golden Bigs and Young Chiefs combated it out by displaying fine football skills in the final match of the tournament where they held each other in a goalless draw. But Golden Bigs went on to win the match on penalties by 4-3.
Golden Bigs won N$4000 and gold medals, while Young Chiefs received N$2000 and silver medals.
In the Veterans final, Northern Coaches defeated Ondangwa Masters 1-0. Northern Coaches won N$3000 and gold medals and a white big goat, while Ondangwa Masters got N$2000 and silver medals.
Mr Tiro Dengeinge was the best coach of the tournament. The top goal scorer was from the African United who scored 5 goals in one match. He received a golden trophy.
The tournament will be an annual event, and this was just a new beginning in soccer as by next year more teams from across the northern regions will be expected to participate.
The organisers of the tournament thanked Mr Shilunga who provided Oshana NFA referees who officiated all the games without any conflicts.
