This Winter will see the first ever major athletics event taking place in northern Namibia.

While there has over the years been athletics events taking place in the north such as the the Namibia School Sport Union (NSSU) events, and Athletics Namibia events, there has never been an event initiated and organized by an independent northern-based athletics institution.

Such will only be the case when the Oshakati Pharmacy Track & Field Championship get to take place on 23 July 2022.

The one-day event which will be organized under the Ohangwena Athletics Club banner will see athletes from across Namibia vying for top honors at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.

The launching of the event took place on 12 April 2022, at Oshakati Independence Stadium boardroom, where amongst those in attendance were Ohangwena Athletics Club’s president Mr Sammy Mushelenga, and Oshakati Pharmacy Group’s marketing officers Mr Paulus Mwandingi and Ms Ester Shitaleni.

Also in attendance was Oshikoto’s senior sport officer Ms Ngonyofi Nangolo, Ohangwena’s senior sport officer Ms Paulina Mutilifa, Namibia School Sport Union Ohangwena chairperson Mr Teofelus Alexandel, and Ondangwa town councilor Mr Nocodemus Amadhila, as well as the chief sport officer for northern regions Ms Sunday Haitembu.

Oshakati Pharmacy Group handed over the sponsorship and full support to Ohangwena Athletics Club who will organize the championship.

“We believe in the concept of the championship as proposed to us by Ohangwena Athletics Club,” said Paulus Mwandingi, marketing manager for Oshakati Pharmacy.

“Ohangwena Athletics Club is trying to polish the gem which is our youth with talent in athletics. We believe in the concept and we have trust in their technical ability. By sponsoring the championship we are doing it for the love of our community.”

Oshakati Pharmacy’s Ms Ester Shitaleni said that depending on the success of the championship on 23 July, it could become an annual event.
