The Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off 2023 northern round that took place today in Oshakati saw three out of 61 contestants go through to the next round which will take place in August.
After a whole day of kapana activities in a fierce competition between 61 contestants, 90% of whom were female, who were then whittled down to ten contenders, three of whom were male, the last trio was announced which consisted of two females and one male.
Most of the kapana contestants who showcased their kapana braaiing skills were from Oshakati, but a few of them also came from other towns such as Oshikuku, Outapi, Ondangwa, Ongwediva and Omuthiya.
The contestants were each given all ingredients necessary to make kapana, and time within which to complete the task.
The judging panel consisted of Chef Aina, Chef Alina and Chef Philip, who looked at personal hygiene, table skills, taste, presentation and creativity within the kapana tradition.
The three who have emerged out of this northern round are Luise Iimvula, Johannes Haulyondjaba and Cleopatra Shipanga.
They will meet another three who will emerge from the coastal round (Walvis Bay) which will take place in July, and the central round (Windhoek) which will take place in August, who will then battle it out over the kapana coals at Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair in August.
The final winner will then walk away with a furnished mobile food vending trailer worth N$100 000 and cash prize of N$10 000. The second and third runners-up will also walk away with some cool prizes.
The Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off 2023 is in its ninth year, and this year it is being co-sponsored by Nedbank, Bakpro, Agra, and Omulunga Radio.
