The junior mayor of Ongwediva, Simson Uusiku, will bring about change upon the youthful residents of Ongwediva during his term of office.

The Grade 11 learner of Gabriel Taapopi Secondary School is deputized by a fellow learner Ovaua Kozosi in leading a junior council of 18 youngsters from various schools in Ongwediva.

The junior council was inaugurated on 5 October at an event attended by Ongwediva Mayor Taarah Shalyefu and other town councilors, as well as several parents and teachers.

“Youth leadership is believed to play an essential role to build future leaders who will have a clear mind map on how to allocate resources in the most productive way to achieve the economic objectives of the country, not forgetting how to overcome barriers which are threatening the goal of a prosperous Namibia,” Uusiku said in his inaugural speech.

“My speech for today will be centred on accepting my new responsibilities and giving assurance that my team and I will most definitely bring about change upon the youth citizens of Ongwediva.”

Uusiku stated that leadership is not the act of giving orders, “but rather to motivate the stakeholders to work in the best interest of goal attainment. And I believe I have the qualities of a good leader, with confidence, innovation, good communication skills, problem solving skills and creativity being no exception.”

“I truly believe that my position as the Ongwediva Junior Mayor comes with great responsibilities to lead the youth of Ongwediva towards a mutually desired goal, with the assistance of my fellow junior councilors as well as the assistance of the town council and other interested parties.

“Greatness cannot be achieved by doing everything on your own; a helping hand is needed to get you there.”

Uusiku also said that he believes in his abilities as well as of those of his team. “And all we can guarantee is that change will be observed upon the youth.

“As young leaders we are here to prove that even the smallest minds can have a great impact on the society by addressing certain crises, not forgetting the implementation of well thought of ideas, with the overall aim of promoting the engagement of the youth in certain activities which are beneficial to them and to the environment of Ongwediva.

“With that said I hereby accept my responsibility as the Ongwediva Junior Mayor and I am honoured to be put into this position in order to bring about change upon the society of Ongwediva following the moto of the town ‘freedom and hard work’.

“I will invest in my energy and time to make sure that by the time our two years term declines we would have really done a lot and with the view of my team being identified as being the most active junior council Ongwediva has had.”
