In April, employees of Nedbank Namibia visited A. Shipena Secondary School in Windhoek to engage with grade 11 and grade 12 learners on the importance of managing money wisely.
The visit was aimed to equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions as they transition into adulthood.
With over 300 learners in attendance, the team of Nedbank employees, from the collections and credit departments, conducted an interactive session covering topics such as saving, investing, and understanding financial products and services.
Through engaging presentations and real-life examples, the team emphasized the significance of financial planning and responsible money management. On top of that, they also provided career guidance and the importance of researching one’s career path before embarking on the journey after graduating matric.
Credit Recoveries Officer, Lenitha Oorlam, gave a breakdown on financial literacy, saying: “Financial literacy is a tool each young person should employ because it builds a solid foundation for future financial success.”
Oorlam also stated: “By empowering students with the knowledge and tools to navigate the complexities of personal finance, we hope to instill lifelong habits that will serve them well.”
Towards the end of the session, the learners were given an opportunity to answer questions relating to the session and received gift packs after they got the answers right.
A member of the Learner Representative Council, and Grade 12 learner, Eve Nambuli, thanked Nedbank for the session.
“The session had a positive impact on my fellows, and I believe that from today majority of them will look into different financial instruments with the guidance of their parents,” she said.
Life Skills teacher at the school, Anita Mugare, said: “We are grateful to Nedbank for their commitment to educating our learners about financial literacy. The timing for this visit and the presentations were perfect as they not only enriched our curriculum but also inspired our learners to take control of their financial future.”
Nedbank Namibia Communication and Public Relations Manager, Selma Kaulinge, said: “As money experts who do good, we firmly believe that instilling financial literacy in learners while they are still in school is paramount.
“It is not merely teaching them how to put money away for rainy days, but it’s also about equipping them with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of our financial landscape with confidence.”
