The International White Cane Day was today commemorated and celebrated at Ongwediva, Oshana region, where Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Mrs Anna Nghipondoka, was the top government official.
Nghipondoka read the speech of Vice President Mrs Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah who did not make it to the event.
Also present was Oshana Governor Mr Elia Irimari who welcomed the hundreds of people who assembled at the Ongwediva Trade Fair Centre.
The International White Cane Day, which is commemorated annually on the 15th of October, was this year in Namibia commemorated on 17 October.
The event, organized by the Namibian Federation of the Visually Impaired (NFVI), was held under the theme “Embracing Inclusive Education with My White Cane”.
Speakers at the event included Dr Johanna Shuuluka, an optometrist and recent medical school graduate.
Ms Mwangelwa Sinengela recited a poem titled “We were there”.
There were also performances by several groups such as Kufamosha Cultural Group, the Eluwa Resource School, and the NDF Brass Band.
