Ongwediva Town Council has started with work to construct a leisure park which will be one of the best in the whole northern regions.

“Ladies and gentlemen, look around you. What do you see?” said Ongwediva Mayor Taarah Shalyefu at the groundbreaking event for the construction of the leisure park.

“An empty plot, erf? An area of land? Well, I see something different. I see potential. I see the future. And that future starts today.”

Shalyefu stated that the project is not just about beautifying the neighbourhood, but it is “about revitalising our community spirit.

“The Leisure Park project will transform this place into a lively hub of activities. We will have green spaces where families can picnic and our children can play. We will have walking trails that wind along the open spaces, inviting us all to reconnect with nature.”

The park will also have an amphitheater for concerts and community events, “a place where we can come together and celebrate our shared culture.”

Mr David Mulokoshi, the senior manager for planning and technical services at Ongwediva, said that the construction of the Leisure Park at Extension 11, behind Chicco Mall, has been budgeted for in the current financial year with an amount of N$2.5 million.

N$1.5 million of this has been allocated for the construction of the first phase which started on 4 November 2024 and ends on 6 March 2025.

The first phase will consist of the construction of the fence around the park, with a vehicle gate on the western side and a pedestrian gate on the norther side, as well as the construction of a water line and water meter, including work of connecting to the existing water line.

The construction of a gravity sewer line and manholes including connection to the existing sewer reticulation network will also be part of the first phase.
