Miss Namibia Jameela Uiras was today on duty doing her social responsibilities by delivering snacks and nappies to a care centre for children with special needs in Oshakati.
The Dr. Frans Aupa Indongo Special Care Centre houses close to 30 children who have mental disabilities. Established in 2002 by a local woman by the name of Aili Shilongo, the centre has for years been providing a safe haven for the children, most of whom were abandoned by their parents.
The centre also does the best it can in providing some cognitive learning abilities to the children despite the lack of resources.
Working through the guidance of the NBC Cares and Miss Namibia Organisation, Jameela today handed over 24 boxes of disposable nappies for boys and girls. Each box has 36 disposable nappies.
The children also received lunch packs consisting of fruits and a hamburger. The items worth a total N$20,000 were donated by Spar Oshakati.
“I thank you, and welcome you warmly here, we appreciate your kindness,” said Mrs Aili Shilongo, the founder and coordinator of the Centre situated in the middle of the semi-formal settlement.
“We are trying our best to provide support to children with disability, and we have a hostel for children whose homes are far. We give the children an opportunity to acquire skills and help them live better in society.”
“It means a lot to me to see that there are people who are doing a lot,” said Jameela. “And we need to do more to make sure that these children get to have a bright future despite their condition.”
The youngest child at the centre is six years old, while the oldest is 24 years. And Ms Catherine Daniel is their teacher.
