One way ticket to Rwanda

By Victor Angula /

In a front page article of a local daily newspaper this last Friday, they tell a story how Namibians are increasingly seeking for “asylum” in the United Kingdom (UK) in an attempt to search for economic opportunities in that country.

And how those (most of them actually) who are refused such permission to stay in UK are either told to come back to Namibia, or they are given a one way ticket to Rwanda.

Some of the Namibians are even claiming to be gay, just so that they can be allowed to stay in the United Kingdom.

Slowly Namibia is becoming one of the many African countries where most people don’t want to stay. People want to leave, to go where they can find opportunities to make a living.

Namibia is becoming an economic graveyard.

It is becoming harder and harder for Namibians to find employment in their own country. It’s becoming harder and harder for Namibians to live productive lives.

And it’s shameful, shameful that a country which is still developing, and it has abundant natural resources, so that opportunities for employment are supposed to be here, but no, people are looking for and finding employment opportunities in countries that are already developed, and which have no natural resources.

It’s shameful that Namibians too are being given a one way ticket to Rwanda, and there in Rwanda, a small country which has no natural resources, the people will be productive.

Namibia, what is wrong with you?

In other news of that same week, it was announced that Namibia has received food parcels worth N$1.3 billion from Qatar. Namibians are increasingly becoming hungry. So that they have to be fed by other countries. But this is a country with abundant natural resources, with vast tracts of land fit for agriculture, and with a small population in comparison to its size and wealth.

Namibia, what is wrong? Should you really be given a one way ticket to Rwanda? Is that what you deserve?
