The Governor of Ohangwena Region Hon Walde Ndevashiya has personally taken up the call to support athletics – himself literally leading by example.
This he did when he helped the cash-strapped Ohangwena Athletics Club with N$16,100.00 to enable the team to participate in the Pupkewitz Athletics Championships which took place in Swakopmund from 20 to 23 December 2021.
Ndevashiya came to the rescue of the team as it was struggling to raise enough funds needed for transportation, accommodation, food and payment of registration fees at the competition.
In a media statement Ohangwena Athletics Club’s manager for marketing and communications Mr Teofelus Moses said that the Governor’s support came in handy and the team went on to make history by coming first among 28 teams from across the country.
“Our team came first, with 18 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 12 bronze medals; in total 45 medals were brought home to Ohangwena Region by youngsters who hail from humble backgrounds.
“The team also achieved a remarkable feat as five of the club’s athletes are currently holding records in various items they participated in.
“The entire team and management would love to thank Honourable Governor and other stakeholders for the generosity they have shown to sport, especially their unwavering support and belief in the potential of the youth in athletics.
“Finally, Ohangwena Athletics Club would like to ask for Good Samaritans to support the club as it is preparing to participate in five Athletics Namibia Grand Prix Series. We need help in raising funds to enable a team of 30 athletes and 5 officials to participate in these series.
“Participation in the Grand Prix Series which will start from 15 January in Swakopmund will be important because those who participate have an opportunity to qualify for international events coming in the near future like the Commonwealth and World Under 20 Championships.
“Any Samaritan who would love to help the team with funds can do so by depositing at Ohangwena Athletics Club, Account: 2000496852, Bank Windhoek, Oshikango. Or can talk to Ms Lavinia Gotlieb at 0818855065.”
