Hundreds of thousands of people lined up along the roads of northern Namibia to pay their respects to the remains of Founding President Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.

The remains of Nujoma were being transported by road from the Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo Airport at Ondangwa in Oshana Region to Etunda village in Omusati Region where a memorial service was held on 20 February 2025; from where the remains were transported to Eenhana the next day.

At Etunda, the birth place of Nujoma, thousands of people turned up to pay their respects to Nujoma who served as Namibia’s president from 1990 to 2005.

On 21 February 2025, from Etunda, the convoy carrying his remains moved along the roads through Okahao, Tsandi, Outapi, Ogongo, and Oshikuku, the towns and settlements of Omusati Region.

As it approached Oshakati it turned along the road facing north to Ohangwena Region, passing through Omungwelume, Ongenga, Engela, Omafo, Onhuno, Okatope, Ondobe, and finally Eenhana.

As the convoy came at settlements and towns where groups of people had gathered along the road of the two regions it slowed down the speed, and this made the convoy to travel at about 45 kilometres per hour from Etunda in Omusati Region to Eenhana in Ohangwena Region.

As a result the starting of the memorial service at Eenhana Sports Stadium was delayed for several hours since the convoy arrived only at 4:36 in the afternoon.

The Eenhana Sports Stadium was filled up with people who turned up to witness and be a part of the historic occasion of sending off Dr Nujoma, although a lot of people trickled out of the stadium shortly since the memorial was being done too late in the afternoon and a lot of the people had come from villages near and far from Eenhana, so that they had to go back home before it became dark.

The memorial service was finished only after 21h00.
