Residents of Omuthiya town and nearby villages can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Mobile Telecommunication Ltd (MTC) announces that they will soon get the first of its kind permanent Mobile home.
In a statement, MTC revealed that plans to open a new and 37th Mobile Home in the heart of Omuthiya town is at an advanced stage.
“MTC is set to open a brand-new shop in mid-July to serve the clientele of the fast-growing Oshikoto town,” says MTC’s Corporate Communications Practitioner, Mr Erasmus Nekundi.
“Until last year, the town used to be served by a mobile van twice a week, a situation that crippled customers’ convenience due to its sporadic service extension and streamlining. This has resulted in people having to travel 83km to Ondangwa for MTC services.”
According to the 2023 Census, Omuthiya has a dual rural-urban population estimated at 39855, with the urban population estimated around 7,500 residents.
As the town is developing at a fast pace, since Omuthiya is the capital town of Oshikoto region, people travel from far and wide to access available services the town has to offer.
“Due to a fast-growing population of Omuthiya, business has resolved that it’s high time that the town gets its own permanent Mobile Home, which will be serving not just the town but also the adjacent villages,” Nekundi states, adding that this decentralisation is a customer-centred move, “an execution of our drive and belief that every MTC customer deserves easy access to our services.
“Upon commission, a range of services such as SIM replacement, registration, account payments and renewals, contract applications, and recharge vouchers will be available.”
One of the Omuthiya residents, Mr Gabriel Tomas couldn’t contain his excitement as he expresses that it is long overdue that Omuthiya gets a permanent and dedicated MTC store.
“As the capital of Oshikoto region, Omuthiya town deserves a lot of developmental activities, and by providing a Mobile Store this will be an integral part of development,” says Tomas.
Tomas expresses his dismay that for a long time they were forced to seek MTC services in other regions, or in Tsumeb, which is 130km away.
“Having a mobile store will solve many ICT issues that the community has interest in such as connectivity information, replacement and registration of sim cards, and just ease of communication and access to the services,” he says.
