Namibia recently celebrated Peter Shalulile’s record-breaking feat of becoming the highest goalscorer in the history of South African Premier Soccer League.
Shalulile scored his 130th goal to break Siyabonga Nomvethe’s record of 129 goals set decades ago.
“Playing for Mamellodi Sundowns Football Club, one of the top South African clubs, and one of the best African clubs, Shalulile is one of the most successful players Namibia has ever produced,” says Simon Kaleni, a fan of Peter Shalulile.
“Although not for the world, but for southern Africa Shalulile is our best export.
“Shalulile’s success in the South African soccer league would have made him a legend and one of the best soccer players, except for one thing – Shalulile has never managed to transfer his skills for the club to the national team.
“While scoring quite easily for Mamelodi Sundowns, Shalulile has never found it easy to score for the Brave Warriors, which he has captained for a few years now.”
Kaleni states that this dilemma has happened with Christiano Ronaldo.
“Christiano Ronaldo would have been one of the greatest players the world has ever produced, except that he never could do for his country Portugal what he has always done for all the clubs he played for in his career.”
Kaleni says that what makes a player great is the ability to do well for the club and the country at the same time.
“I could even say that Christiano Ronaldo was better than Lionel Messi. But Messi seemed to do better, some even considered him the GOAT (greatest of all time) player in European football in the recent past, all because of his ability to do well for the country as for the club.”
