The Old Mutual Foundation is building on the success of its Chair and Desk Initiative, which has already improved learning conditions for more than 4 000 learners across Namibia, as it opens applications for its 2026 intake.
Since its launch in 2023, the initiative has made meaningful progress in transforming classroom environments across the country.
In its first year, seven schools across three regions were supported, reaching approximately 600 learners.
This was followed in 2024 by six additional schools in three new regions, impacting around 800 learners. In 2025, the programme expanded further to eight schools across four regions, benefiting approximately 1 200 learners.
Over the past three years, the initiative has delivered tangible results. Eleven schools have been fully equipped with 1 100 new chairs and 1 100 desks, significantly improving classroom functionality.
A further 10 schools have been revitalised through the repair of 1 000 chairs and 1 000 desks, enhancing safety while extending the lifespan of existing furniture.
Beyond infrastructure, the programme has also contributed to local economic empowerment. Two small and medium enterprises and two vocational training centres have been engaged, while approximately 105 students have received hands-on training in furniture manufacturing, equipping them with valuable, practical skills for future livelihoods.
In total, the initiative has supported 21 schools across 10 regions, with an overall investment of N$2.5 million.
Building on this momentum, the Old Mutual Foundation has announced the next phase of the initiative, with a further N$1.5 million committed for 2026 to continue improving learning conditions and restoring dignity to learners in the classrooms across Namibia.
Applications are now open to schools in the Omusati, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa and Ohangwena regions. In each region, two schools will be selected. One school will receive brand new chairs and desks, while another will benefit from the repair of existing chairs and desks.
“We believe that every learner deserves a dignified space to learn. This initiative is more than furniture; it is about creating opportunity and hope,” said Mignon du Preez, Group Marketing, Public Affairs and Sustainability Executive at Old Mutual Namibia.
Applications will open on 15 May 2026 and close on 15 June 2026. Submissions will be accepted online only via the application platform. Successful schools will be announced on 8 July 2026 through Old Mutual Namibia’s social media platforms.
“At the Old Mutual Foundation, we see this initiative as an investment in both education and community growth,” said Patricia Olivier, Chairperson of the Old Mutual Foundation.
“By improving classroom environments and supporting skills development, we are helping to build a stronger foundation for Namibia’s future: one learner at a time.”
