The Ongwediva Mayor’s Community Backyard Gardening Project kicked off with 80 beneficiaries receiving donations of seeds and gardening tools.
At a handover event on 19 June, the Mayor of Ongwediva Mrs Naemi Amuthenu said that the idea of the project was motivated by the need to make residents productive and work towards food self-reliance.
“We decided to come up with an idea that is truly making a difference to the lives of the people of Ongwediva, with a zero budget,” Amuthenu said.
“This is aimed at strengthening household food security, and improving access to sustainable livelihoods. It will improve access to heathy food. And it lowers household groceries expenses.”
In order to breathe life into the project the mayor approached several businesses at the town, who responded by donating a total of N$60,080.20 worth of gardening tools and seeds.
Those who donated are Indongo Toyota, ALV Consulting Engineers, Oshana Build It, Rani Group and OSMEDS.
