The FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust has donated haemodialysis catheters (drips) to the Oshakati Intermediate State Hospital today in a gesture to support individuals suffering from kidney diseases.

Handing over the donation, Mr Abongile Mpikwa, the Far North Area Manager for FNB Namibia, said that over the past ten years, the FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust has invested 30 million Namibian dollars in community and health development, underscoring a commitment to improving the health and quality of life for all citizens.

“And today, on behalf of FNB Namibia, it is my privilege to present this donation of haemodialysis catheters valued at N$110,515.00 to the Intermediate Hospital Oshakati,” Mpikwa said at an event attended by Oshakati Intermediate State Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr Ruben Kanime and several of his senior staff.

“A haemodialysis catheter is a crucial medical device designed to support individuals suffering from end-stage kidney disease. Haemodialysis catheters are essential in kidney replacement therapy, serving as a bridge to long-term vascular access such as arteriovenous fistulas and grafts.”

Mpikwa added that while these catheters are considered temporary, they play a vital role in initiating dialysis for many patients.

“Despite the associated risks of morbidity and mortality, their use remains widespread due to the immediate need for dialysis access. This has driven continuous innovation in catheter material, design, and placement techniques to enhance patient outcomes and reduce complications.”

Haemodialysis is a life-saving procedure that filters wastes, salts, and fluids from the blood when the kidneys can no longer perform this function adequately.

“This treatment allows individuals with advanced kidney failure to maintain an active and fulfilling life,” Mpikwa said.

Receiving the donation, Dr Ruben Kanime said that the donation by FirstRand Namibia (the parent company of FNB Namibia) comes at a critical time when the hospital is facing significant challenges in maintaining the necessary supplies for the dialysis units.

“On behalf of Intermediate Hospital Oshakati, I extend our deepest gratefulness to FNB Namibia for their generous donation of haemodialysis consumables.”
