Oshana Village Based Football League, a third division formation, started with its first round of games of the season on Saturday when Mvula FC took on New York City, while Mokasi FC and Golden Stars locked horns.

Heiky Land Surveyors was the big winner of the day after defeating Tenacity United by 4 goals to one.

On Sunday Golden Stars was the major winner after defeating WE Academy FC by 8 goals to one, although Mvula FC collected maximum points again after beating Tenacity United by 4-0.

“The league is up and running, and we are grateful that teams are excited and vying for a passage to the second division,” Chairman of the OVBFL Mr Kalimbo Herman said.

Herman points out that before the league came to a standstill a few years ago, it had promoted eight teams to the second division.

“The ninth team is already in the third division of Oshana, vying for qualification to the country’s premier league. That is our success story, which we are proud of.

“Our league used to have 20 teams, but this year we have only nine teams because most of the teams had been promoted to the next level. And that is our dream, to promote every team which is doing well.”

Although the OVBFL does not have a sponsor, by the end of the season there will be prizes to be shared among the top teams, while balls will be given throughout the season to teams which do well in terms of performance and discipline.

“We are still waiting for responses to the proposals for sponsorship which we sent to local companies,” he said.

The league will continue playing at the Mvula Sports Field at Omaalala.
