Political success comes from desire
By Victor Angula |
One definition of leadership is: desire to serve and a willingness to be the stepping stone for others.
But, unfortunately in this country, the “desire to serve” is one thing that seems to be absent. People continue to sit in positions of political authority without having any desire at all to serve and be the stepping stone for others’ success.
This is why you see that despite the vast natural resources of the country, there seems to be no one who is being seen to have sleepless nights agonising over the serious problem of unemployment, high inequality and poverty of the majority of the people who live in shacks.
All from national level, regional and local level no one is being seen to be a true leader – someone being powered by the desire within their hearts to serve. People are being seen because they are in leadership positions, but if you took away the position the person disappears completely from the radar.
Take, for example, the governors of regions, or mayors of our towns. No one is standing out to display a desire and willingness to be the stepping stone for anyone.
Desire to govern well and to lead effectively and help others succeed is the source of productive leadership. Where there is desire to govern well and to lead effectively, leaders will lead their towns and their countries to prosperity and progress.
But where there is no desire, there can only be excuses.
Without desire to be informed and be knowledgeable about the work you’re expected to do, knowledgeable about your responsibilities and desire to own up and bear the blame and consequences of your actions or inaction, then there cannot be success.
Political success comes from desire. Desire is a result of vision. Absence of desire is absence of vision. Without vision, what desire is there for? Without vision there can only be laziness.
Vision determines or decides the condition of the person’s mind and his heart. And both mind and heart determine a person’s conviction, which then determines his habits and actions. Habits and actions determine plans, projects and programmes.
Your desire to serve the public comes from a mind so strong, and vision so clear, and purpose so defined that nothing else is important. Making money for yourself is not important if there is desire in you to serve the public.
Going after your vision and purpose is important for you every day you wake up, so that you have no time to waste in laziness, excuses or wallowing in mediocrity.
Excellence comes from desire. Even town cleanliness comes from desire. Hardwork comes from desire. Desire is the source of success.
